Build Lightly Studio believes in creating a “relationship-centric” design/build community. We challenge individuals and organizations to work together; sharing knowledge, innovation and resources in a grassroots movement to solve local issues as effectively and sustainably as possible. If this sounds like a good fit for you — as a participant, future client, or project sponsor — please complete the contact form below, and we’ll be in touch right away.

Join a Workshop

Whether you are an emerging professional, licensed architect, or architecture, construction, planning, landscape, or environmental design student enrolled in a university program, Build Lightly Studio courses and workshops will provide an unforgettable, unique, and full-immersion learning experience. Past participants have earned course credits towards their degrees, AIA continuing education credits, and internship (i.e. NCARB IDP) credit.

Interested Build Lightly Studio participants are not required or expected to have a background in building or construction. Participants should have an ability to think critically, problem solve, generate solutions, listen, communicate well, be open to different perspectives, and be team/group-oriented. Regardless of whether Build Lightly Studio is hosting a 17-week semester long course or a two-week intensive workshop blitz, it will be a highly intensive, collaborative process that will involve many stakeholders. Build Lightly participants are flexible, adaptable, hard-working, humble, and committed. Experience with community engagement and leading volunteer groups is a plus!

Host a Project

Have a design challenge you’d like to share and are interested in hosting the next Build Lightly Studio adventure? Are you a community-oriented, non-profit, or NGO group that is interested in becoming our next client either within the U.S. or abroad? The ideal Build Lightly Studio client:

  1. is flexible with their time schedule
  2. is open-minded and appreciates design and construction as a teaching tool
  3. has funding for materials/some equipment (anywhere from $1,000 – $5,000 could be appropriate)
  4. can rally a network of community volunteers to contribute “sweat-equity” hours
  5. owns land or a site on which to construct a simple, modest project with a small program (anywhere from 200-1200sf is possible)

Build Lightly Studio will provide the design and construction team, the students gain an irreplaceable learning experience, and all parties will have an opportunity to give back to others in the Citizen Architect spirit!
